Introduction

In the spring of 2019, Altarum was awarded an Office of Population Affairs (OPA) research grant, the Link Study, to develop and test a cross-training intervention designed to:

  • Improve collaboration and coordination of services among sexual & reproductive health and substance use disorder providers; and
  • Ensure that providers have the skills and self-efficacy necessary to screen and refer clients with sexual & reproductive health and/or substance use needs.

The study offered an opportunity for health care providers to participate in an interactive training and six months of technical assistance. Trainings were conducted across disciplines; that is, sexual and reproductive health providers learned about behavioral health topics and vice versa. The project has created interdisciplinary linkages between providers in a geographic area, enabling staff to learn about local resources and services and develop processes for screening and referrals.
